LANGUAGE & LEARNING SUPPORT

LANGUAGE

Brookhurst International School offers French, English, Kiswahili and Arabic. Our experienced instructors, many of them have been trained in well-known language schools in the country and abroad, are all dedicated to our teaching philosophy, which emphasizes the living language in its cultural context. We aim to help all students to communicate in any of the selected language as quickly as they can.

The languages are given equal timing as other subjects; also enrollment is open to every student. Courses are offered at every level of proficiency—beginner, intermediate, or advanced.

LEARNING SUPPORT

Brookhurst International School is committed to offering an inclusive education, with an inclusive curriculum, to secure the best possible progress for all students whatever their needs or abilities.

The school considers that a student has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability (which may be physical or mental) which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. Further the school recognizes the need to engage the Gifted and Talented Learners to attain the highest level of academic progress and achievement.

Brookhurst has a vibrant Learning Support Department headed by a Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCo). It’s responsible for ensuring Psychometric tests are done at the admission level and establishing the need for further diagnostic Psychometric tests. SENCo ensures that special programs such as Listening, reading, handwriting and administered to specific students to help them access the curriculum and remediate any learning challenge.

The Learning Support Department (LSD) handles difficulties such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia, Behavior and Emotional Difficulties, Autism, Delayed fine motor skills, Slow Speed of Handwriting among other challenges.

SENCo ensures that Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) and Behavior Support Plans are written and documented to be used by all educators handling the students in the SEN Register.

The department al works closely with external agencies such as Educational Psychologists to supplement the school provisions.

Students are included in the Universal SEN Register for easy tracking. Further, SENCo ensures that access arrangements are done for internal and external examinations. This is to ensure that the learners in the SEN register are not disadvantaged.
